AIRTEL GHANA’S EVOLVE WITH STEM INSPIRES PUPILS OF ADUM PRESBYTERIAN SCHOOL IN KUMASI

Airtel Ghana's corporate social responsibility initiative Evolve with STEM (EWS) which seeks to inspire belief and change mindset of young people towards Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics is extending its reach outside Accra as it engages pupils of the Adum Presbyterian School in Kumasi.

A team from Airtel led by Managing Director Lucy Quist and Director of Legal and Corporate Affairs, Hannah Agbozo brought the inspiration and thrill of Evolve with STEM to the pupils of the Adum Presbyterian School whilst on a stakeholder engagement visit to the region.

Lucy Quist encouraged the pupils to aspire for greater heights and to use “all the resources available to them to achieve their dreams”. The session also demonstrated how STEM is utilized in everyday life to demystify these subjects. As part of the interaction, the team from Airtel donated books on Science, Mathematics, English and Social Studies to the school’s library.

Making the presentation, Hannah Agbozo, Director of Legal and Corporate Affairs at Airtel Ghana said “everyone has the potential to bring about change wherever they are and we at Airtel are committed to empowering young people to fully realize their potential. It is our hope that today’s session with our future leaders and this donation of books and reading materials will go a long way to shape the minds of the pupils of Adum Presbyterian School and its environs”.

The team from Airtel Ghana were hosted by the headmaster of the school, Mr. Steven Kwaku Owusu, resident minister, Rev. Gyamera Konadu and the Dept. Regional Manager of Presbyterian Schools in the Ashanti Region.

“We cherish this school’s affiliation with the Evolve with STEM initiative and the visit of the Managing Director of Airtel Ghana with her team to our school.

The staff and pupils of this school strongly believe that the growth and development of our nation (Ghana) largely depends on the appropriate development of its human capital especially in STEM.

In this regard, we fully support the Evolve with STEM initiative and commend Airtel Ghana for embarking on this initiative. On behalf of the entire teaching body, I wish to express our profound gratitude to Airtel Ghana for choosing our school to be a beneficiary of this initiative” Mr. Steven Kwaku Owusu stated.

The initiative started on a pilot basis within Accra since its launch in December last year. The past few months have however seen the initiative make strides to reach a wider audience outside of the capital city. A team of employees led by Lucy Quist, in May, activated Evolve with STEM in schools in the Central and Brong Ahafo Regions.

All the visitations included a mentoring session, donation of books and stationery supported by the Rotary Club of Tema to complement teaching and learning efforts in the schools.

Airtel also recently launched the third phase of the initiative by setting up STEM Clubs to serve as a conduit for practical and hands on interaction with Science, ICT and Mathematics – to further boost the confidence of Club members.

Since it was launched in December 2015, Evolve with STEM has impacted the lives of over 1,000 students through inspirational talks, experiential exercises and capacity building for teachers. All these exercises have sought to demystify the study of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and ultimately encourage these young minds to reach for their dreams.
