VIASAT1 HOLDS HEALTH WALK AND FREE CERVICAL SCREENING FOR WOMEN

Hundreds of women from all walks of life joined the number one entertainment television Viasat1 and its partners in a walk dubbed ‘Power Walk ‘’ to crown their Mother’s Month celebration and create awareness on cervical cancer.

The initiative was to educate women on the need for early screening and also adopt best lifestyle choices to prevent cervical cancer and create atmosphere for networking.

The event, which was the final phase of activities to mark Viasat1’s Mother’s Month, saw women of all ages taking part in the walk and health screening. Nana Ekua Asanteba Mensah of Viasat1 News, and Kokui Selormey and Jessica Opare Saforo of This Morning and Celebrity Fanzone, respectively, actively took part in the walk.

Cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among women in Ghana, and Ghana’s mortality rate is among the highest in the world. These rates have been rapidly increasing in contrast to the decreasing cervical cancer incidence and mortality rates in developed countries. Despite these staggering statistics, cervical cancer prevention is not commonly promoted in Ghana.

The event began with a warm up exercise to prepare participants, followed by the walk which started from Aviation Social Centre through the streets of Airport and 37 and back to the starting point.

The Marketing Manager of Viasat1 Ghana, Ms. Afua Kissi-Nyame said the prevalence rate of cervical cancer in Ghana is alarming, thus, the reason why the station has committed resources to help raise awareness. She noted that with the education, Viasat1 would increase awareness of cervical cancer so that women would adopt lifestyles that would help prevent the cancer.

Dr. Dennis Addo from Claron Health International who partnered the initiative, encouraged women to adopt early screening of cervical cancer to ensure early treatment. Some participants said they now understood what lifestyles they need to adopt as women, and they were relieved to know it is not scary to screen for cervical cancer.

Viva Life Ventures, distributors of Aloe Vera King in Ghana, provided free drinks and souvenirs to participants, while Voltic Ghana supported the event with cartons of water.

The Viasat1 Power Walk Against Cervical Cancer was powered by Claron Health International, Aloe Vera King, Voltic Ghana and Battor Hospital; as well as Ghana Police Service and National Ambulance Service.
