Eid Al Fitr 2016 in Ghana is just days away, you might either be thrilled about the upcoming holidays or getting prepared to be bored out of your wits!

The Eid Al Fitr (also known as Eid ul-Fitr, Eid al-Fitr, Id-Ul-Fitr, Eid) is a joyous occasion best experienced with family and friends. Beginning at the start of the month of Shawwal, Eid Al Fitr is the celebration that marks the end of the Holy month of Ramadan.

The devout Muslim starts his day by listening to sermons (khutba) at the communal gathering to pray.

Having a giving heart is a popular sermon during this period; Muslims are enjoined to give zakat al-fitr (charity in the form of food) during Eid al-Fitr.

In Ghana, Zakat al-fitr is a form of charity consisting of a variety of local food or its monetary value.


Muslims travel to different parts of Ghana to participate in festivities organized by prominent Muslim communities in Tamale and Accra.

Some people spend the day feasting till they pass out, while other invest their time in fun activities. We’ve listed below a few suggestions on things to do in Ghana this Eid Al Fitr holiday.

1. Go shopping and stay entertained

The major shopping malls in Accra are usually packed with a never ending trail of shoppers, seeking to buy a gift for their loved ones. The various shops give out last minutes discounts to increase, making it the merrier for even non-Muslims. Just before going shopping couples usually hang out at the Cinemas to catch a movie.

2. Visiting the beach

Enjoy the early morning sun in a resort in Ghana. Accra offers some of the finest beaches in Africa. If you’ve been busy all year, it time to get out and become one with nature.

Make sure to check out popular Accra beaches such as Kokrobite Beach and Labadi Beach.

3. Get in touch with family and friends

When celebrating far away from home, regardless of how much fun you’ve had it always feels incomplete without family. 4. Enjoy the holidays indoor
