WHAT CONSTITUTES RAPE? TUNE INTO LAW EXPRESS THIS WEEKEND

Rape is a commission of unlawful sexual intercourse or unlawful sexual intrusion. Historically, rape was defined as unlawful sexual intercourse with a woman against her will. The essential element of the crime were sexual penetration, force and lack of consent.

Women who were raped were expected to have physically resisted to the utmost of their powers or their assailant would not be convicted of rape. Additionally, a husband could have sex with his wife against her will without being charged with rape. Beginning of the 1970s, state legislators and courts expanded and redefined the crime of rape to reflect modern notions of equality and legal property.

Airing this Sunday between 6.30pm and 7.30pm on Metro TV, the panellists on Law Express will discuss the position of the law on rape, what constitutes rape and also the punishment for anyone who perpetuates the act.

Moderator for the show, Nuhela Seidu will be hosting lawyer and economist, Gad Motey. Mr. Motey was called to the bar in 2007 and has been in continues active service. His is a general legal practitioner with interest in commercial, corporate maritime and criminal law.

The other panellist will be Reginald Niibi Ayibontey, a lawyer and former Member of Parliament for the Ododiodioo constituency. He is also the former chairman of the national premix committee and specialises in civil and criminal litigation.
