National Treasure and African asset

He had been widely spoken of but I'd never seen him before like Jesus Christ. I set eyes on him in Kwahu some eight or nine years back for the first time, in the early days of Adom FM's Easter street carnival.

We were the sensational team, that had taken Ghana hostage with our monster hit song "AfrikanGurlz" and was billed for every show in the country at the time. We were about mounting the stage when his manager approached Jerry Justice and told him he's back stage and has been there for a while.

If my memory serves me right, Jerry's response at the time to his colleague was in the negative and said he wasn't billed to perform so he should mark time. The fear was, after 5Five's performance all the other hit makers will come on and he may not make an appearance, so the plea was to get him on before us.

The audience were thrilled to pieces with 5Five's performance that indelible night, on our downward climb off stage he was being readied to go on and that's when I caught a peek at him.

There and then I noticed the hunger in his eyes, the thirst to be heard, the libido for illustriousness. I felt the aura and sprightliness that engulfs him. Ever since that moment, I have keenly observed him. So when the opportunity availed itself for us to work together for greatness, I was humbled. I could foretell him climbing a ladder of power and walking the corridors of high standing.

In my almost a month in lockup, between the hours of 12 midnight and 3am was when we had our prayer service led by young pastor Isaac. In one of the worships he preached about "Okordie" the bird and its qualities. As the sermon travelled into the wee hours of the morning, all I visualized was the musical gem.

VISION. FEARLESSNESS. TENACITY. VITALITY. HIGH FLYER, does not SCAVENGE and also NURTURES their young ones. A few qualities of the eagle.

What is really fascinating is that he never gives up living, instead he retreats to the workroom and over a period goes through mutation. Like the eagle, it knocks off its own beak by smacking it against a rock, plucks out its talons and then feathers. Each stage produces a re-growth of the removed body parts, enabling the eagle to live for three to four decades more.

He still posses that crave I spotted in his eyes back then. Treading consciously on the path of my prediction of him giving Ghana a Grammy. I have listened to countless beautiful songs of his and it's divine how he never mince words neither does he scavenge off others lyrically.

Intuitively, he represents the BRANDNAME. He is a NATIONAL TREASURE and an AFRICAN ASSET.

I doff of my hat to Dr Duncan for discovering him.

SARKODIE epitomizes the EAGLE in the GHANA COAT OF ARMS.
